Though I am not a breeder, I get many inquires about Swissies.  Do you want a Swissy?  Are you sure?  Did you see them on Animal Planet?  They looked great on Animal Planet, but unfortunately, that is not an accurate picture of a Swissy.  Here's some Swissy info that you might not find advertised readily.  *Note: This list describes potential problems in Swissies.  Many Swissies are healthy, well-behaved, and sound in mind and body.

  • Don't like hair in your food? Then you probably don't need a Swissy.  Swissies shed, profusely.  Just because they have short coat, it does not mean they will shed.  Twice a year, they also blow coat and cover your home in a nice thick layer of Swissy hair.
  • Swissies bark.  And they bark.  And they BARK!  They bark to alert you to the FedEx truck 3 houses down.  They will bark to alert you that there's a bird in a tree in the neighbor's yard.  These guys like to bark.  Here's a video of Mouse barking
  • Without tons and tons, and I do mean tons of training, there can be very bad things with Swissies.  They are a pushy breed, meaning that they will test you.  They can be stubborn.  They can be hardheaded.
  • Without constant socialization, they can become fearful or aggressive.  Some will display food/toy/crate aggression (which is unacceptable in my opinion).
  • They can have empty tummy bile vomit.  Sometimes this happens if they are not fed in close intervals.  While this is an easy fix (feed them), it can be messy and very inconvient.  While Mouse rarely does it anymore, if I hear any sort of hacking, snorting, or stomach lurching, I fly out of bed to clean up and feed.
  • The females can be incontinent.
  • Bloat is a problem in the breed.
  • Epi
  • Dry Mouth
