It isn't a secret that I'm a HUGE fan of TED.com.  I absolutely loved TedXAustin, and I had the good fortune of also attending TedXUT.  I volunteered to do live tweeting through the event (that was my only task at TedXUT), and here's some key points from a few of the talks.  Also, lunch at the Carillon was absolutely fantastic.  I think the Carillon wants me to gorge my face and prepare for times of famine.  Why else would they have a buffet? :o)

  • John Daly gave a talk about selling ideas.  Some people try to sell a plan before they even sell an idea.  You've got to sell an idea to your target before you try to sell a plan to fix it.
  • Sunni Brown talked about the Doodle Revolution, and how drawing pictures of information actually leads to better retention of the information.  The stat she gave was that after 72 hours, only 10% of written notes are retained while 90% of pictorial notes are retained.
  • Mark Regnerus is a sociologist that spoke about the price of sex.  He talked much about the research I do, but I'm a social psychologist with an biological and evolutionary bent.  So I spoke with Mark later about a few things that he mentioned, but failed to include the biology.  Of course, sociologists and evolutionary psychologists don't exactly agree even on the same data set, so his response was that he reports on some of the biology, but isn't really interested in it.  It seems strange to me to talk about sex without talking about biology.  It is like talking about computer programming without using math or talking about social media and not talking about the internet.  To each their own.

Overall, the event was fun and informational, but it definitely had a different vibe than TedXAustin.  There was much less energy in the room, and it seemed like there was a lack of community as compared to TedXAustin.  For the live tweets streamed during the event, visit @TedXUT.
